The OUT OF ENERGY error means the TRON network did not have enough resources to finish your USDT transfer. Your USDT stays on your address, but the TRX spent on the attempt is already gone. Here is why it happens, how to check the damage and how to resend the transfer without losing TRX a second time.
What the OUT OF ENERGY error means
Technically, a USDT TRC-20 transfer is a smart contract call. The network uses energy to run it: about 65,000 units for a standard transfer and about 131,000 for a transfer to an address with no USDT yet.
Your address can pay for that energy in two ways:
- with energy it already has: from your own staked TRX or delegated to it for a period through a rental;
- by burning TRX from your balance at the energy price, which is 100 SUN per unit as of Oct 5, 2026.
The network uses the energy on your address first, then burns TRX for the shortfall. If neither is enough, the contract stops halfway, and the transaction ends with the result OUT_OF_ENERGY. Wallets and the TronScan block explorer show this error both with underscores and with spaces.
Where your TRX went
A failed transaction on TRON is still paid for. The network charges the energy and TRX spent on running the contract before it stopped. This cannot be undone: neither the network nor the wallet returns burned TRX.
Example: your address has 3 TRX and no energy, and a standard transfer needs 6.5 TRX burned. The network spends the TRX you have, the transfer fails and a new attempt again needs 6.5 TRX or energy on your address.
Your USDT, however, has not gone anywhere. The transfer did not go through, the amount is still on your address and you can send it again.
Why the transfer failed
No energy and little TRX on the address
This is the most common cause. Without energy, a standard transfer needs 6.5 TRX burned, and a transfer to a new address 13.1 TRX. If your TRX balance is lower, the network burns what is there and stops the transfer.
Energy covered only part of the transfer
For example, your address has 65,000 energy, but the recipient is new and the transfer needs about 131,000. For the missing 66,000 units, the network tries to burn about 6.6 TRX. If you do not have it, the transfer fails.
Energy cut too close
The figures 65,000 and 131,000 are approximate. If your address has exactly that much energy and the transfer uses slightly more, the network covers the difference by burning TRX. With a zero TRX balance, even a small shortfall ends in an error.
Fee limit too low
Every smart contract transaction on TRON has a fee limit: the maximum amount of TRX the network may burn for it. Wallets usually set it automatically. If it was set manually and is lower than needed, the transfer stops even when you have enough TRX.
The energy rental period ended
Rented energy stays on your address only for the set period, then returns. If you send the transfer after the period ends, there is no energy left on the address, and it all comes down to your TRX balance again.
Another transaction used the energy
Any smart contract transaction from your address uses energy. If you sent two transfers but got energy for one, the second one burns TRX or fails.
What to do if your transfer failed
- Find the transaction in TronScan. Search by transaction hash or by your address. The transaction page shows the error, the energy used and the TRX burned.
- Make sure your USDT is still there. Check the address balance in your wallet or in the block explorer. With OUT OF ENERGY the transfer does not go through, so the amount should still be on your address.
- Check the recipient. If their address has no USDT yet, plan for 131,000 energy, not 65,000.
- Get the resources. There are two ways: top up TRX to cover the burn (6.5 or 13.1 TRX plus a small margin for bandwidth), or rent the right amount of energy to your address.
- Check that the energy has arrived. Available energy is shown on your address page in TronScan. Send the transfer after that and before the rental period ends.
- Send the transfer again. If your wallet lets you set the fee limit manually, do not set it lower than needed.
Ordering energy step by step is covered in the guide on how to buy energy.
Which is cheaper: topping up TRX or renting energy
| Transfer | TRX burn, 100 SUN | Energy rental, 32 SUN (example) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard, 65,000 energy | 6.5 TRX | 2.08 TRX |
| To a new address, 131,000 energy | 13.1 TRX | 4.19 TRX |
The rate of 32 SUN per unit of energy for 1 hour is an example rate here: the exact price is shown in the app before you pay. Reference prices are on the energy pricing page.
Topping up TRX is simpler if it is a one-off transfer you need right now. Renting pays off if you send transfers regularly: at the example rate, you pay about a third of the burn price for the same unit of energy.
How to avoid this error next time
- Before sending, check whether the recipient holds USDT, and count 65,000 or 131,000 energy per transfer.
- Get energy for all the transfers you plan to send, not just one.
- Send only after the energy shows up on your address and before the rental period ends.
- Keep a small amount of TRX in your wallet for bandwidth and in case energy use is slightly higher than expected.
- If you send payouts all the time, switch on always-on energy (energy kept on your address): it is topped up automatically after each transaction, so your operating address never runs out of energy between payouts.
Quick reference
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OUT OF ENERGY, almost no TRX in the balance | Neither energy nor TRX to burn | Top up TRX or rent energy |
| Error on a transfer to a new address | 65,000 energy instead of 131,000 | Add energy up to 131,000 |
| Error with enough TRX in the balance | Fee limit too low | Raise the limit if your wallet allows it |
| Error after a rental | The period ended or another transaction used the energy | Check energy in TronScan and rent again |
