Freeze TRX or Rent Energy: Which Makes Sense for Your Volume
Freezing TRX gives about 9.6 energy per TRX a day, so one USDT transfer a day needs about 6,700 TRX staked. When freezing pays off and when renting is cheaper.

As of Oct 13, 2026, every TRX you freeze for energy gives about 9.6 energy a day, so one standard USDT transfer a day needs about 6,700 TRX staked. Freezing makes sense if you already hold that much TRX and send at a steady pace. If you would have to set aside TRX just for this, or your volume jumps around, renting energy for each batch is usually the simpler choice and keeps your TRX free.
Below: how staked energy is calculated, how to freeze TRX for energy, a comparison table for 1 to 1,000 transfers a day and a model of what staking really “earns” compared to rental.
How much energy one frozen TRX gives
Staking under Stake 2.0 does not give a fixed amount of energy. You get a share of the whole network’s daily energy, in proportion to your share of all TRX staked for energy. The TRON documentation gives the formula:
Your energy = (your TRX staked for energy / all TRX staked for energy) × 180,000,000,000
The numbers as of Oct 13, 2026, 06:54 UTC, from the public TronGrid API:
- total daily energy of the network: 180,000,000,000 (chain parameter
getTotalEnergyCurrentLimit, set by Proposal #97); - total TRX staked for energy across the network: 18,729,496,901 TRX (
TotalEnergyWeight); - energy per staked TRX per day: 180,000,000,000 / 18,729,496,901 = 9.61.
So for one standard transfer, which uses 64,285 energy on that date, you need 64,285 / 9.61 = 6,689 TRX. If you plan with the round 65,000 figure, it is 6,763 TRX. A transfer to an address with no USDT uses 130,285 energy and needs about 13,557 TRX. The “about 6,700 TRX” figure used across this blog still holds.
The share moves without you
Your energy depends on what everyone else stakes. If total TRX staked for energy grows by 10% and you change nothing, your energy drops by about 9%. To keep one transfer a day, you would need about 7,440 TRX instead of 6,763. The reverse also happens. Check TotalEnergyWeight before relying on old numbers.
How to freeze TRX for energy
The general flow is the same in any wallet that supports Stake 2.0:
- Open the staking section of your wallet or of TronScan, connected to your address.
- Choose Energy as the resource. TRX staked for energy gives no bandwidth, and the other way round.
- Enter the amount. At the Oct 13, 2026 ratio, every 1,000 TRX gives about 9,610 energy a day.
- Sign the transaction. Once it is confirmed, the energy is on your address, and your TRX stays on the same address as staked balance.
- Optionally, use the TRON Power you received to vote for validators. Staked TRX gives TRON Power one to one.
What happens when you unfreeze
This is the part people underestimate. According to the unstaking documentation and the chain parameters as of Oct 13, 2026:
- the waiting period is 14 days (
getUnfreezeDelayDays). Unstake on Oct 16 and the TRX becomes withdrawable on Oct 30; - after that you send one more transaction to withdraw the TRX into your spendable balance;
- you can have at most 32 unstake operations pending at once;
- you can cancel, but only all pending unstakes together, not a single one;
- TRX you have delegated to another address cannot be unstaked until you take the delegation back;
- unstaking takes back the same amount of TRON Power, and votes are reduced proportionally.
Freeze, burn or rent: the table
Per day, planning with 65,000 energy per standard transfer. The burn price is 100 SUN per unit of energy as of Oct 13, 2026.
| Transfers a day | TRX to keep staked | TRX burned a day | Rental a day at 32 SUN (example) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6,763 | 6.5 | 2.08 |
| 10 | 67,634 | 65 | 20.8 |
| 100 | 676,343 | 650 | 208 |
| 1,000 | 6,763,429 | 6,500 | 2,080 |
The rental column uses an example rate of 32 SUN per unit of energy for 1 hour: 65,000 × 32 SUN = 2.08 TRX per transfer. This is an example rate: the exact price is shown in the app before you pay, and reference prices are on the pricing page.
Staking has no daily charge, but the amount it locks is about a thousand times the burn cost of one transfer and about 3,250 times the example rental cost.
Model calculation: what staking “earns” compared to rental
Staked TRX does not disappear, so the honest comparison is not “6,763 TRX vs 2.08 TRX”. It is: what does the locked amount save you each year?
Model calculation, one transfer a day, 6,763 TRX staked:
- versus renting at the example 32 SUN: 2.08 TRX × 365 = 759.2 TRX a year saved, or 11.2% of the staked amount;
- versus burning: 6.5 TRX × 365 = 2,372.5 TRX a year saved, or 35.1% of the staked amount.
Three things lower that figure in practice:
- Unused days. Staked energy works every day whether you send or not. If you send on 3 days out of 7, the saving versus rental falls to 4.8% a year.
- Your share shrinks when others stake more, as shown above.
- Liquidity. Getting the TRX back takes 14 days, so it cannot react to a sudden need for funds.
Voting rewards from TRON Power work the other way and add to the result. Their size changes, so we leave them out of the model.
The conclusion of the model: staking beats rental only if you already hold the TRX, use the energy nearly every day and value the 14-day lock-up at less than about 11% a year at the example rate. If you would have to buy TRX first, the comparison also depends on the TRX price, which this model does not cover.

Peaks: where staking falls short
Used energy recovers gradually over a rolling 24 hours, as the documentation puts it. That suits an even flow. It does not suit peaks.
Say you stake 67,634 TRX for ten transfers a day and then need 40 transfers on payout day. The stake covers 10, and the other 30 burn 195 TRX. To cover the peak with staking alone, you would need about 270,500 TRX locked for the whole year. A mixed setup is common for that reason: staking for the base load, rental for peaks. The business page shows how teams with regular payouts set this up.

How to decide
- Count your transfers per day, and separately the share that goes to addresses with no USDT. Those need twice the energy.
- Look at what you already hold. If you have idle TRX equal to 6,763 times your daily transfers, staking is worth checking.
- Check how even your volume is. A steady flow favours staking; peaks favour rental.
- Decide what the 14-day lock-up means for you. If the TRX may be needed at short notice, keep it unstaked.
- Test before committing. Rent energy for a week of real transfers in the app, compare the cost with the table above, then decide on staking.
For a single transfer, the exact TRX you need is broken down in how much TRX you need to send USDT. For the cost picture of a business sending hundreds of transfers a day, see USDT transfer costs for exchanges.
FAQ
How much TRX do I need to freeze for one USDT transfer a day? About 6,700 TRX as of Oct 13, 2026: 6,689 TRX for the 64,285 energy a standard transfer uses. For a transfer to a new address, about 13,600 TRX.
How long does unfreezing take? 14 days, then a separate withdrawal transaction. Pending unstakes can be cancelled, but only all at once.
Do I lose my TRX when I freeze it? No. It stays on your address as staked balance and comes back after unstaking and the 14-day wait.
Is rented energy the same as staked energy? For the transfer, yes. Rented energy is energy delegated to your address from someone else’s stake for a set period, and the delegation is visible in TronScan. The comparison of all three ways to pay is in USDT TRC-20 transfer fee.
